National Awards

Department of the Army (DA) Awards

a. The US Army ROTC Medal for Heroism. Is awarded by DA to any JROTC Cadet who has distinguished themselves by an act of heroism. The achievement must have resulted in an accomplishment so exceptional and outstanding as to set the individual apart from other students or from other persons in similar circumstances. The performance must have involved the acceptance of danger or extraordinary responsibilities exemplifying praise-worthy fortitude and courage. There must have been risk of life on the part of the cadet.

b. The Department of the Army Superior Cadet Decoration. Is the highest meritorious decoration that can be presented to a ROTC cadet in either the senior or the high school program. Only one such decoration may be awarded during an academic year for each class. The recipients must be in the top ten percent of the JROTC class and in the top twenty-five percent of their academic class. The cadets must be recommended by the Senior Army Instructor and the Principal to the First Region, US Army Cadet Command after they have shown a demonstrated quality of leadership, discipline, courtesy, and character that places them clearly above their contemporaries.
 
Awards from National, Civic, and Fraternal Organizations

a. The Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement. Is awarded annually to one rising LET-2 cadet from a school with a three-year program, and one rising LET-3 cadet from a school with a four-year program for superior achievement and scholastic excellence in military and academic subjects, and to stimulate the development of leadership. The cadet is nominated by the Senior Army Instructor and the Principal to the Commander, First Region, U.S. Army Cadet Command. There are only four LET-2 and four LET-3 cadets in the nation who receive this award. This award is furnished by the Legion of Valor. The members of this organization are holders of one of this nations two highest award for extraordinary heroism; the Medal of Honor or the Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross or Air Force Cross.

b. The American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary Medals. Are awarded to cadets in their first year of JROTC (American Legion Auxiliary - two medals) or second year of JROTC (American Legion - two medals). The cadets who are selected must be in the top twenty-five percent of their JROTC class. The four medals are presented by American Legion Post, and are awarded in two categories:
(1) Military Excellence - For demonstrated outstanding qualities in military leadership, discipline, character, and citizenship.

(2) Scholastic Excellence - For demonstrated qualities of leadership, extracurricular activities, and academic excellence.

c. The American Veterans of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam (AMVETS) Award. Is awarded annually to a cadet who possesses individual characteristics contributing to leadership, such as: A positive attitude, personal appearance, initiative, dependability, judgment, and self-confidence. The cadet must also display a potential for becoming an officer and have an "A" in all JROTC subjects.

d. The Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Award for JROTC. Is awarded by the AUSA to a second year cadet who has demonstrated a high potential for further outstanding leadership in both military and non-military endeavors. The recipient must have indicated a strong desire to continue as a JROTC cadet for the next LET level of instruction.

e. The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Medal. Is awarded to a member of the graduating class who is in the top twenty-five percent of the class in JROTC and academic subjects. The cadet must have demonstrated qualities of dependability, and good character, adherence to military discipline, leadership ability, and a fundamental and patriotic understanding of the importance of JROTC training.

f. The Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) JROTC Leadership Medal. Is awarded to a second year cadet. The cadet must be in the top twenty five percent of the LET 2 class and be active in JROTC extra curricula activities.

g. The National Sojourners JROTC Award. Is awarded to a LET-3 cadet who is in the top twenty-five percent of their academic class, and who has demonstrated the ideals of Americanism by deed or conduct or both. The cadet must also have demonstrated a potential for further outstanding leadership.

h. The Military Order of the World Wars (MOOWW) ROTC Award of Merit. is awarded to a LET-1 cadet for demonstrated outstanding performance in both military and academic subjects during the school year which places that cadet above their contemporaries. The cadet should have indicated by both military and scholastic grades, extracurricular activities, or individual endeavor a desire to serve the country.

i. The Order of the Daedalians JROTC Achievement Medal. Is presented to a LET-2 cadet who has demonstrated an understanding and appreciation of patriotism, love of country, and service to the nation. The cadet must be ranked in the top ten percent of the LET-2 class. The Order of the Daedalians was formed in 1934 by World War I pilots. They have the expressed purpose of perpetuating air power as an instrument of national policy.

j. The Reserve Officers' Association (ROA) Medal. Is awarded to a first year cadet who demonstrates an outstanding dedication to the arts and sciences of national defense. The cadet is presented the award in grateful acknowledgment of meritorious contributions to the common good of the United States. The cadet must be in the top twenty-five percent of the LET-1 class.

k. The Retired Officers' Association (TROA) Medal Is awarded by TROA, to a LET-2 cadet who is selected for outstanding performance, demonstrated leadership potential, service to the community and nation, and participation in JROTC.

l. The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) Medal. Is awarded to a LET-3 cadet who performs in an outstanding manner in both military and academic endeavors, shows a high degree of merit with respect to leadership qualities, soldierly bearing, and all around excellence in the JROTC Program studies and activities.

m. The United States Army Recruiting Command (USAREC) Award for JROTC. Is awarded to a second or third year cadet who must be in the top twenty-five percent of their class and have one more year of JROTC to complete. . The recipient must have demonstrated outstanding leadership traits and posses the potential for assuming positions of increased responsibility, participate in extracurricular activities that foster both scholastic and military excellence, and demonstrate qualities of dependability and good character. In addition, the cadet must respect military discipline standards, and posses a fundamental and patriotic understanding of the purposes of JROTC training.

n. The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) JROTC Medal. Is presented by Post 6064 of Tabor City, and Post 6066 of Nakina, and awarded to cadets selected by the military staff in special recognition for outstanding achievement and exceptional leadership ability, which clearly places the cadet above his contemporaries.

Institutional Awards

Academic Ribbons

a. The Distinguished Cadet Award for Scholastic Excellence (N – 1 - 1) is awarded each semester to one cadet who exhibits the highest degree of excellence in scholastics. This ribbon will also be awarded to the cadet selected to receive the Stallion Battalion Commander's Trophy.

b. The Academic Excellence Award (N – 1 - 2) is awarded each semester to one cadet in each LET level for maintaining the highest academic grades.

c. The Academic Achievement Ribbon (N – 1 - 3) is awarded each semester to those cadets who maintain an “A” average in all academic subjects.

d. The Perfect Attendance Award (N – 1 - 4) is awarded annually to those cadets with no absences or tardies, excused or unexcused.

e. The Student Government Ribbon (N – 1 - 5) is awarded to those cadets who are elected to an office of the Student Body, or the Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior Class.

f. The LET-1 Service Ribbon (N – 1 - 6) is awarded to cadets who satisfactorily complete the first six weeks of JROTC LET-1 training each semester.

g. The LET-2 Service Ribbon (N – 1 - 7) is awarded to cadets who satisfactorily complete the first six weeks of JROTC LET-2 training each semester.

h. The LET-3 Service Ribbon (N – 1 - 8) is awarded to cadets who satisfactorily complete the first six weeks of JROTC LET-3 training each semester.

i. The LET-4 Service Ribbon (N – 1 - 9) is awarded to cadets who satisfactorily complete the first six weeks of JROTC LET-4 training each semester.

j. The LET-5 Service Ribbon (N – 1 - 10) is awarded to cadets who satisfactorily complete the first six weeks of JROTC LET-5 training each semester.

Athletic Ribbons

a. The Varsity Athletic Ribbon (N – 2 - 1) is awarded to those cadets who participate as members of the varsity athletic program.

b. The JROTC Physical Fitness Ribbon (N – 2 – 2) is awarded each semester to those cadets achieving the following scores on the one-mile run: male—maximum of 8:30; female—maximum of 10:45.

c. The Junior Varsity Athletic Ribbon (N – 2 - 3) is awarded to those cadets who participate as members of the junior varsity athletic program.

d. The LET-6 Service Ribbon (N – 2 - 4) is awarded to cadets who satisfactorily complete the first six weeks of JROTC LET-6 training each semester.

e. Ribbon (N – 2 – 5) is optional and not currently used.

 
Military Ribbons.

a. The Senior Army Instructor Leadership Ribbon / Medal (N – 3 - 1) is awarded each semester to one cadet in each LET level who displays the highest degree of leadership.

b. The Personal Appearance Ribbon (N – 3 - 2) is awarded annually to those cadets who consistently present an outstanding appearance. They must have an average of no less than 95 on inspections, and have never failed to wear the proper uniform on uniform days for the current school semester. This ribbon is also awarded to the recipient of the Best Dressed Cadet Trophy.

c. The Proficiency Ribbon (N – 3 - 3) is awarded to those cadets who have demonstrated an exceptionally high degree of leadership, achievement, and performance of duty to such a degree as to set them apart from their contemporaries. Winners of the Senior Army Instructor's Trophy will also receive this ribbon.

d. The Drill Team Ribbon (N – 3 - 4) is awarded at the end of each semester to those Drill team members who have maintained a 85% attendance level at all drill team practices.
e. The Most Improved Cadet Ribbon(N - 3 – 5) is awarded to the cadet chosen as the most improved cadet of the semester.

f. The Color Guard Ribbon (N – 3 - 6) is awarded to those cadets who participate in a minimum of 5 color guard performances.

g. The Rifle Team Ribbon (N – 3 - 7) is awarded each semester to those Rifle Team members who have maintained a 85% attendance level at all team practices.

h. The Adventure Training Ribbon(N – 3 – 8) is awarded to those cadets who successfully complete JROTC Summer Camp.

i. The Commendation Ribbon (N – 3 - 9) is awarded each semester to cadets whose duty performance is so exceptional that it exceeds that expected of a cadet in their grade and experience.

j. The Good Conduct Ribbon (N – 3 - 10) is awarded each semester to those cadets who have outstanding conduct for the whole semester. Not wearing a uniform on required uniform days, referral to ISS or suspension from school will be a disqualifying factor.

k. The Summer Camp Ribbon (N – 3 - 11) is awarded to those cadets who satisfactorily complete a JROTC summer camp.

l. The Best Drilled Company Ribbon(N – 3 - 12) is awarded each semester to all members of the Best Drilled Company.

m. The Best Overall Company Ribbon(N – 3 - 13) is awarded each semester to all members of the company selected as the Best Overall Company.

n. The LET-7 Service Ribbon (N – 3 - 14) is awarded to cadets who satisfactorily complete the first six weeks of JROTC LET-7 training each semester.

 
Miscellaneous Ribbons

a. The Parade Ribbon (N – 4 - 1) is awarded to those cadets who participate in local parades with the "Stallion" Battalion. A minimum of three parade appearances is required.

b. The Recruiting Ribbon (N – 4 - 2) is awarded to those cadets who recruit a minimum of one cadet into the JROTC Program. Only one award of the ribbon will be made in a semester.

c. The Best Drilled Cadet Ribbon(N - 4 – 3) is awarded each semester to the cadet selected as the best drilled cadet.

d. The Fund Raising Ribbon (N - 4 – 4) is awarded each semester to cadets who attain the goal set by the SAI for fund raising activities.

e. The LET-8 Service Ribbon (N – 4 - 5) is awarded to cadets who satisfactorily complete the first six weeks of JROTC LET-8 training each semester.

f. The Service Learning Ribbon (N - 4 – 6) is awarded each semester to cadets who participate in service learning or community service projects.

g. The Excellent Staff Performance Ribbon (N - 4 – 7) is awarded each semester to those staff members who exhibit the greatest dedication to duty and efficiency in performance.

Miscellaneous Awards

The Academic Achievement Badge is awarded to the top ten percent of each LET class at the end of each semester based on grades earned in JROTC courses during that semester. If the cadet fails to qualify for the award the following semester, the previous award is withdrawn. Cadets who receive a subsequent award will receive an oval shaped piece of felt.

a. Second award - a red (scarlet) pad.

b. Third award - a silver gray pad.

c. Fourth award - a gold pad.
 

The Department of the Army Certificate of Achievement is awarded to selected cadets as determined by the military staff. It consists of an overprinted heavy parchment form with the national eagle in gold.

The "Stallion" Battalion Commander's Trophy. At the close of the school year, the current “Stallion" Battalion Commander along with the SAI, AI, and the battalion XO, will pick the cadet who they consider to be the best LET-1 cadet in the battalion. This selection is based on academic merit, military leadership, conduct, bearing, extracurricular JROTC activities, team membership, and overall attitude. This cadet will receive a trophy, a certificate of achievement, and the Distinguished Cadet Medal (N – 1 –1). The cadet's name will be inscribed on a plaque that is permanently displayed in the JROTC classroom.
 
The Senior Army Instructor's Trophy. At the close of the school year, the SAI. along with rest of the military staff, will select one cadet to receive the SAI trophy. This cadet will be selected on the basis of his outstanding performance of duty, above and beyond that normally expected of a cadet in their grade and experience. The cadet selected for this honor will be the one that "goes the extra mile" and works beyond their normal duty requirements. They will receive a trophy, a certificate of achievement, and the proficiency ribbon (N - 3 - 3). Their names will also be inscribed on a plaque that is permanently displayed in the JROTC classroom.
 

The Cadet of the Year Award. Is awarded annually to one cadet who displays the highest degree of leadership and academic excellence. The cadet receives a trophy, a certificate of achievement and the Senior Army Instructor's Leadership Medal (N – 3 – 1). His name is also inscribed on a plaque that is permanently displayed in the JROTC classroom.

The Best Overall Company Trophy. This trophy will be awarded at the end of the academic year to the company that accumulates the highest overall score in the following areas: uniform inspection, average JROTC grade, average Cadet Challenge score, Company Drill Performance score, average individual evaluation score. The winning company's name will be inscribed on a plaque that will be maintained in the JROTC area. Members of the winning company will be awarded a certificate of achievement, 5 points towards their overall JROTC grade and the Best Overall Company Ribbon (N – 3 – 13). The winning company must have an overall score of 85 or better.

The Best Drilled Company Trophy. This trophy will be awarded at the end of the academic semester to the company that receives the highest overall score on the weekly drill performance test. Members of the winning company will receive a certificate of achievement, and the Best Drilled Company Ribbon (N – 3 – 12). The winning company will also have its name inscribed on a plaque maintained in the JROTC area.

The Best Drilled Cadet Trophy. This trophy will be awarded at the end of each academic semester to the cadet who obtains the highest overall score during the Knockout Competitions. The winning cadet will receive an individual trophy, a certificate of achievement, and the Best Drilled Cadet Ribbon (N – 4 – 3). The cadet's name will also be inscribed on a plaque maintained in the JROTC area.

The Best Dressed Cadet Trophy. This trophy will be awarded to the cadet that achieves the highest individual score on the weekly uniform inspections. To be eligible, the cadet must have an average score of no less than 95, have no violations for failure to wear the uniform, and have no violations for wearing the wrong uniform. The winning cadet will receive an individual trophy, a certificate of achievement, and the Personal Appearance Ribbon (N – 3 – 2). His name will be inscribed on a plaque maintained in the JROTC area.
 
Meritorious Unit. This award is presented by the U. S. Army Cadet Command upon recommendation of Headquarters, First Region, U.S. Army Cadet Command. Eligibility for this award is based on maintaining exceptionally high standards throughout the school year and receiving an outstanding rating on the Regional Formal Inspection (RFI) conducted bi-annually. The award consists of a five-pointed star of white enamel on a gold background to be worn above the nametag by each cadet in the unit.
Honor Unit. The award consists of a five-pointed star of blue enamel on a gold background to be worn above the nametag by each cadet in the unit.
Honor Unit with Distinction. This award is given to a small percentile of schools qualifying as Honor Unit Schools. The award consists of a certificate and a five-pointed star of yellow enamel on a gold background to be worn above the nametag by each cadet in the unit.
