Stallions' Jacobs signs with Coastal

South Columbus High School football standout Andrae Jacobs signs a national letter of intent Wednesday to play at Coastal Carolina University. The SCHS senior is flanked by his parents Darlene and Bernard Jacobs. Standing, left to right, are SCHS head football coach and athletic director Joey Price, Jacobs' sister Charmaine Jacobs, Jacobs' brother Bernard Jacobs, SCHS assistant football coach Willie Gore and SCHS principal Dale Norris. Jacobs, a 6-foot, 225-pound linebacker-fullback, helped lead the way in the Stallions' march to state 2A football finals this past season.

The Coastal Carolina University football team had been keeping close tabs on South Columbus High linebacker Andrae Jacobs since his sophomore season with the Stallions.

On Wednesday, the 6-foot, 225-pound Jacobs signed with the Chanticleer program, becoming one the most coveted members of its 2008 recruiting class.

Jacobs earned 2A All-State honors this past season after playing a big role for the Stallions in their march to the state finals.

Coach Joey Price's SCHS squad reeled off 15 straight victories, including the Waccamaw Conference and Eastern N.C. 2A regional titles, before falling to Lincolnton 28-14 in the state 2A championship game held at N.C. State University's Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh.

Jacobs was named the 2007 County Football Player of the Year following the Stallion's record-breaking season. He earned All-Waccamaw Conference and All-Columbus County honors in each of the last three seasons.

Jacobs said he chose the Conway, S.C., Coastal Carolina program because of the interest it has shown from virtually the first time he stepped on the field as a varsity player.

“I was impressed by their campus, the coaching staff and the players I met,” said Jacobs, who also saw considerable action at fullback on offense for the Stallions. “It's not far from home, so my family and friends will get to come to a lot of the games.”

Coastal Carolina is a member of the Big South Conference (Division I-AA). Although football at CCU is relatively new, it has been an up-and-coming force under head coach David Bennett.

The Chanticleers will open their 2008 season on Aug. 30 against national power Penn State at State College, Pa.

Britt Leggett, a former athlete at West Columbus High School, heads into his senior season as starter at offensive tackle after earning All-Big South First Team honors last season.

Jacobs will enroll during the summer session at CCU while preparing to join the football team. Jacobs is the son of Bernard and Darlene Jacobs of Tabor City. His father was a standout player at Loris High School in the last 1980s while his mother graduated from Tabor City High School.

Price said that Jacobs's work ethic and leadership qualities have been big boosts to the Stallions' football success of the past three seasons.

“He's the type player you can't replace,” Price said. “He was able to do it all ... defense, offense and specialty teams. We knew we could always count on him.”

Jacobs is the third SCHS senior athlete to sign with a major college program this school year. In November, Dakota Piver signed to play baseball at UNC-Wilmington and Kelly Strickland signed to play softball at Liberty University.
